I've
thoroughly enjoyed and definitely learned
from every video produced by the Wil Howe
Ranch, and this two-volume set is no
exception. I give them four out of
four stars. As Siskel and Ebert
would say, "Two thumbs up!"
Wil and his wife, Beverly, are quite the
dynamic duo as a team for
clinicians. They deliver a clear,
concise, workable message-one that can
take you from "Foundation to Finished," an
appropriate title for their program.
They don't just stop with training in the
snaffle bit, they show you the skills you
need to develop a truly broke horse-one
that's "up in the bridle."
Because of this month's major feature
on clinicians (see "Your Clinic
Companion," Special Report, page
80), I thought it appropriate to review
the Howes' latest how-to effort.
Beverly handles the reins on this one, and
she does an excellent job.
The premise behind the two tapes: "Its the
little things that count that make a big
difference in your horse's overall
attitude and behavior." And how true
this is.
Both tapes cover the gamut in presenting
good, solid horsemanship methods.
Part 1-Ground Handling Tips
includes catching, leading, grooming,
handling feet, saddling, bridling, and
adjusting tack. Part 2-Effective
Riding Habits covers mounting, riding
with confidence and balance, knowing what
makes a horse handle well, neck reining
and collection proper and effective use of
leg aids and spurs, simple safety tips,
and basic trail sense and
safety.
Using a variety of horses, Beverly
offers good common sense techniques for
everyday horsemanship situations. In
each scenario, she explains the objective,
pointing out the horses proper reaction to
her actions, as well as any signs of
resistance, and what to do about
them. You see her work with animals
in "Real " time and get real
results.
These programs have a broad appeal.
They're a must for the beginning rider,
but they easily hold the attention of
advanced riders, as well. Viewers
will also enjoy the set's high production
quality.
